Enamel contouring

A millimetre can matter—but enamel sets the limit.

Tooth reshaping, also called enamel contouring, gently removes a very small amount of outer enamel to smooth a rough edge, soften a minor chip or balance subtle differences in shape.

It is designed for refinement, not major transformation. Because enamel does not grow back, every planned adjustment must stay within a safe thickness and preserve the tooth’s structure and bite.

The treatment boundary

Only the outer enamel is adjusted.

Small refinementMajor change → another option

If the desired result requires significant shortening, narrowing or removal near dentin, reshaping is not the appropriate treatment.

What a subtle treatment can change

Best suited to edges and contours—not colour or position.

+

A tiny chip

Smooth a limited irregularity when enough supported enamel remains.

+

A rough corner

Refine an edge that repeatedly catches the lip or tongue.

+

Uneven incisal edges

Balance small length differences without substantially shortening teeth.

+

Minor shape asymmetry

Soften a point or contour that makes one tooth look slightly different.

Before any enamel is removed

We check structure, thickness and contact.

A tooth can look long or uneven for reasons that contouring cannot safely correct. Position, wear, recession and the relationship with opposing teeth all need consideration.

Enamel availability

The planned area must have enough enamel to remain protected after refinement.

Cracks and restorations

A rough edge may be a fracture or filling problem rather than excess enamel.

Bite contacts

Removing an edge can change how front teeth guide and contact one another.

Tooth proportions

Shortening one tooth may solve one difference while creating another elsewhere.

Subtract or add?

Reshaping and bonding work in opposite directions.

A conservative smile plan may use one technique or a small combination. The goal is to preserve enamel while creating the intended edge and proportion.

Tooth reshaping removes.

Useful when a tiny amount of sound enamel extends beyond the desired contour. It cannot lengthen, widen or lighten a tooth.

+

Dental bonding adds.

Useful when a tooth needs length, width, a repaired corner or a localized colour change. Added resin requires maintenance over time.

A focused appointment

Plan the edge. Refine gradually. Recheck the bite.

Step 01

Mark the intended contour

We compare neighbouring teeth and identify exactly where a small adjustment is appropriate.

Step 02

Reduce in controlled increments

Fine instruments remove minimal enamel while shape and symmetry are checked repeatedly.

Step 03

Smooth, polish and verify

The surface is finished, roughness is removed and contacts are reassessed in different jaw positions.

Anaesthetic is often unnecessary because treatment remains within enamel, which has no nerve supply. Sensitivity or a need for deeper removal is a reason to stop and reassess.
Tooth reshaping FAQs

Small treatment, important boundaries.

Is tooth reshaping permanent?+

Yes. Removed enamel does not grow back, which is why changes are intentionally small and carefully planned.

Does enamel contouring hurt?+

Treatment limited to enamel is generally comfortable and often does not require local anaesthetic. Tell us immediately if you feel sensitivity.

Can reshaping make my teeth straight?+

It can soften very minor visual differences at the edges, but it does not move teeth or roots. Crowding and bite concerns need orthodontic assessment.

Can you shorten long front teeth?+

Only by a limited amount when enamel and bite permit. Apparent length can also result from gum recession or tooth position, which contouring will not correct.

Will reshaped enamel be rough?+

The treated surface is smoothed and polished. If an area later feels sharp or rough, it should be assessed for wear, a chip or another cause.
