Tooth Extractions for Selkirk Residents

A new dental office and a tooth that may have to come out can be a lot at once. If you live in Selkirk and have not visited our McPhillips Street clinic in Winnipeg, this page describes how to get in touch and what your appointment should involve.

Getting acquainted

First Contact for Selkirk Residents with a Problem Tooth

Walking into an unfamiliar office, you do not know the people, the layout or how they work. Here is the short version. You contact the clinic and describe the concern. At your appointment, the tooth is examined and an X-ray reviewed, and you hear why removal is or is not being considered.

Selkirk is outside the City of Winnipeg, so you will be coming into the city for this care. Before setting out, you are welcome to ask what the appointment will cover and what you should bring. Being new simply means there is more for you to find out, and for us to learn about you.

Start with your concern

You need no diagnosis to get in touch. Describing what you have noticed is plenty.

Share your history

Coming new to us means your health, medications and allergies must all be gone over.

Hear the reasoning

You should come away knowing why a particular treatment is being suggested.

How we think about a tooth

Keep it if possible, remove it if necessary.

Since you do not know us yet, here is our general approach. Natural teeth are preserved whenever that is a predictable choice, and extraction is considered once alternatives have been understood.

Options short of removal

Part of your first appointment may involve hearing about ways to keep the tooth, if your findings allow.

  • Restorations, for a tooth that retains enough support.
  • Root canal therapy, when the pulp is the issue and the tooth is restorable.
  • Monitoring, for stable findings carrying no unacceptable risk.
  • An honest word about how predictable each one is.

Reasons for removal

Your dentist can tell you which of these, if any, applies. Their explanation should make clear what they found.

  • Extensive decay leaving little to work with.
  • A deep or unrepairable fracture.
  • Severe damage to support from gum disease.
  • Planning for orthodontics or dentures.

Removal may be just one option on the table, and you are encouraged to ask anything you wish before deciding.

Once you are in the chair

What to expect from us during a removal.

Knowing the routine makes an unfamiliar room less daunting. The method used is shaped by your tooth’s position and roots, the bone around it and whether it is fully visible.

  1. 01

    We go over your details

As a new patient you may have more to share. We review your medications, allergies, health history and X-rays, and confirm the tooth with you.

  2. 02

    We numb the area

You get a local anesthetic, and we check how the area feels before going on.

  3. 03

    We remove the tooth

We work the tooth loose and lift it out. You will feel movement, and some cases involve a small incision or cutting the tooth into sections.

  4. 04

    We send you off prepared

We clean up, stop the bleeding, and place gauze or sutures when suitable. You then receive written home instructions and know which symptoms should prompt a call.

Before a first visit

A few questions for someone new to us.

New patients often wonder about details that regulars take for granted. Ask about them in advance, and you will walk in with one less thing on your mind.

Questions about estimates and how long to allow are also fine to raise at this point.

Good to ask on first contact

  • What should a new patient bring to an appointment?
  • How much time should I allow for a first visit?
  • Would you like me to get X-rays from another dental office?
  • Could removal be part of my first visit, or would that come later?

An unfamiliar place

A clinic you can picture ahead of time.

It may help to know what the space looks like before arriving. These photos show part of the clinic, so you have some idea of where you will be sitting.

Tell us how you feel

We cannot know your dental history or fears yet, so mention anything that would help us look after you.

Ask who does what

Feel free to ask who you are speaking with and what their role is in your care.

Take your time at the front

Anything you forgot to ask on the phone can be raised at the counter when you arrive.

After your first experience with us

Staying in touch while you heal.

Everything you need should be on your written instructions, which reflect your procedure and health. Protecting the clot is the broad aim, and you are welcome to call us with concerns even though you have only just met us.

01

At home

Bite on gauze as you were told, go with soft food that is not hot, chew on the opposite side, and clean carefully around the site.

02

Avoiding setbacks

Do not vape, smoke, spit forcefully or drink through a straw during the period you were given. Doing these may disturb the clot.

03

Reaching us

Keep our number handy. Bleeding that pressure does not stop, worsening pain, fever, drainage, a bad taste, greater swelling or unexpected numbness all merit a call.

Emergency medical care, not the clinic, is the right place to go for trouble breathing or swallowing.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about tooth extractions in Selkirk.

Ask our team
Do I need to become a regular patient to have this assessed?

Ask the clinic about this when you get in touch, explaining what is going on with the tooth. They can tell you how an appointment would be arranged.

What will you want to know about me?

Expect questions about your health history, medications and allergies, as well as the tooth itself. Tell your dentist too about anything you have found difficult at past dental visits.

How will I know why you recommend removal?

Your dentist should go through the examination and X-ray findings with you and explain the reasoning. Ask about anything you do not follow until it makes sense.

Does an extraction hurt at a new office any differently?

The principle stays the same wherever you go: local anesthetic is used so you should not feel sharp pain. Pressure and movement are expected, and you should speak up right away if uncomfortable.

What if I need help after I have left?

Phone the clinic. Your instructions list what is worth calling about, and a first-time patient should feel just as free to call as anyone else.

How do I get in touch for the first time from Selkirk?
