Matching colour is only the beginning.
Tooth-coloured restorations repair decay, wear, fractures or failing dental work using materials selected to relate to nearby enamel. A successful result also needs suitable strength, shape, contact, bite and a margin that can be maintained.
The size and location of the repair determine whether material is placed directly in the mouth or custom-made outside it.
What creates a natural match?
The restoration should relate to the whole tooth—not just a shade tab.

Two treatment pathways
Direct and custom restorations are made differently.
Direct composite
Tooth-coloured resin is bonded, layered, shaped and polished directly in the prepared tooth. It is commonly used for smaller and moderate repairs.
Custom restoration
Ceramic or another planned material is fabricated as an inlay, onlay, veneer or crown, then fitted and bonded or cemented.

Replacing dark fillings
A different colour does not always mean a filling needs to be replaced.
Removing an existing restoration also removes material and may involve additional tooth structure. Before recommending treatment, we look beyond appearance to assess the margins, cracks, decay, remaining support, symptoms, bite and your priorities.
Monitor, repair or replace?
The best next step depends on what the examination and, when appropriate, dental images show—not simply whether the restoration is dark or tooth-coloured.

Monitor
A restoration that remains stable, functional and free of concerning findings may simply be checked at future visits.

Repair
When a defect is small and the surrounding restoration is sound, a localized repair may sometimes preserve more tooth structure.

Replace
Broader failure, recurrent decay, fracture or inadequate support may call for complete replacement or a different restoration design.
Our goal is to preserve sound tooth structure whenever a predictable option allows it.
If replacement is appropriate, we will explain the reason, the proposed material and whether a filling, inlay, onlay or crown best suits the tooth.

Are white fillings as strong as silver fillings?+
Material performance depends on repair size, location, moisture control, bite and design. The comparison should be made for the specific tooth.
Will the colour match perfectly?+
The goal is a natural relationship, but teeth have multiple colours and optical properties. Lighting and dehydration can also affect shade evaluation.
Can tooth-coloured material stain?+
Composite surfaces and margins can stain over time, especially with tobacco, beverages, roughness or plaque. Polishing or replacement is not always necessary.
Why might I need a crown instead?+
A tooth with extensive damage or weakened cusps may need broader coverage than a direct restoration can predictably provide.
How long will it last?+
There is no fixed lifespan. Size, material, bite, hygiene, habits, bonding and new decay all influence longevity.
