Thinking arch by arch

Why One Jaw Can Need a Different Plan From the Other

An arch is the whole upper or whole lower row of teeth, and each one sits on its own bone with its own anatomy. With conventional dentures, movement can be more noticeable in the lower arch, though your experience may differ. What you feel day to day is a good place to begin.

The number of implants is not a fixed figure. It depends on which arch is being treated, your bone and anatomy, the denture design and what you hope to achieve. Your upper and lower teeth also have to work together, so we consider how they meet even if only one of them is troubling you.

Each arch examined

Bone and gum conditions are reviewed for the jaw that concerns you and how it relates to the other.

Your bite considered

Whatever is planned on one side of your mouth has to meet what lies opposite it.

Numbers set by planning

How many implants you may need is worked out through imaging and restorative planning.

Questions for each jaw

How the decision takes shape.

We look at what you want from each arch and what your mouth can support. These are the kinds of points that tend to influence the recommendation.

The arch causing trouble

Start with the denture that moves, rubs or lifts, because your day-to-day experience guides the conversation.

  • When the movement happens, and how much it bothers you.
  • The quantity of bone available for implants in that jaw.
  • The health of the gums that will continue sharing support.
  • Whether the current denture’s strength and fit would allow adapting.

The arch opposite

Even a jaw you are happy with deserves a look, as it influences how pressure and chewing are shared.

  • What is opposing the treated arch when your teeth come together.
  • Whether the existing bite and tooth positions suit the plan.
  • How a change on one side could affect the way you close.
  • Any concerns you have that are easy to overlook, however small.

We can only advise on which arch or arches may suit a snap-in denture after examining you, and in some cases the answer may be a different option.

The order of things

One sequence, shaped around your arches.

Whichever jaw is involved, implants heal before the denture connects. Your own timeline is laid out in your plan.

  1. 01

    Compare both jaws

We review your health history, gums, bone and bite, and look closely at any upper or lower denture you wear now.

  2. 02

    Image the planned area

Three-dimensional imaging supports decisions on implant locations, working alongside the goals for your finished denture.

  3. 03

    Heal, then record

Implants are placed and allowed to integrate. Records then establish your bite, your tooth position and how the denture relates to the healed implants.

  4. 04

    Connect the denture

Its retention is tuned, pressure spots are checked, and you practise removal under guidance so you can do it properly on your own.

Before your assessment

Think about which arch bothers you, and how.

You may know immediately, or you may just feel that something is off. Both are fine. Any detail on when each denture moves helps us focus the examination.

An estimate for one arch will not necessarily reflect two, so ask about costs once a plan is clear and bring any insurance or CDCP information.

Bring with you

  • Both your upper and lower dentures, if you wear both.
  • Notes on which one shifts, and when it tends to do so.
  • Your list of medications and known health conditions.
  • Questions about treating one jaw versus treating two.

No wrong answer

You do not need to have decided yet.

Coming in unsure which arch to treat, or whether to treat either, is perfectly reasonable. Part of the point of an assessment is to help you think it through.

Ask about both scenarios

You can ask what treating one jaw would mean, and what treating both would involve.

See it on your images

Ask to have the relevant areas pointed out if a visual explanation would help you.

Take time with the answer

Treatment is a significant decision, and a question can always come up later at home.

Once you are wearing it

Keeping an eye on the whole bite.

Attachments and tissues change over time, and so can how your arches meet. Daily cleaning is shown to you for your particular appliance, and you will be told whether to leave it out overnight.

01

When the bite feels different

Your bite is included in regular examinations, and any change is worth mentioning sooner.

02

Inserts on the treated arch

These small components wear over time and are designed to be maintained or replaced.

03

Trouble from the other jaw

Report new soreness or movement in your opposite denture too, as it can matter as well.

Ask our team
How can I get my arches assessed if I live in Burrows Central?

Request a visit with the form here or ring (204) 338-3003, mentioning which jaw concerns you. Examinations are held at 2358 McPhillips Street in Winnipeg, at a time the clinic will confirm.

Does the lower arch always need treatment first?

Not automatically. Lower dentures can feel less stable, but your recommendation depends on your own anatomy, bite, bone and priorities, and the assessment looks at those points directly.

Do upper and lower arches use the same number of implants?

Do not assume they will. The count is determined by the specific arch, its bone and anatomy, the denture design and your goals, using imaging and restorative planning to decide.

If I treat one arch, what happens to my other denture?

It may stay as it is, or it may need attention so that the two work well together. We would review how your teeth meet before advising on it.

Can my existing upper or lower denture be converted?

Sometimes. Each denture is judged separately on fit, bite, strength and tooth position, so one could potentially be suitable for adapting while the other may need replacing.
