What’s the difference between scaling and root planing?+
Scaling refers to removing plaque, calculus and bacterial deposits. Root planing refers to carefully clearing contaminated material from the root surface. In practice the two are done together on the planned areas.
What kinds of instruments are used?+
Specialized instruments designed to work under the gumline are used. If you’d like to know exactly which ones apply to your treatment, ask before we begin.
Will I feel anything while the roots are being cleaned?+
Local anaesthetic is commonly used to keep you comfortable, and experiences differ. Tell us during treatment if something bothers you, so that it can be addressed.
Why does the work go so slowly in one area?+
Each planned root surface needs careful attention, and that takes time. A section-by-section approach allows for freezing, thorough instrumentation and your comfort.
Is anything removed besides buildup?+
Contaminated material on the root is cleared along with deposits. The purpose is a cleaner surface that tissue can heal around, not a surface made artificially smooth.
