Root canal therapy removes the affected tissue, cleans and seals the canal system and allows the natural tooth to remain in place. The tooth then needs a suitable final restoration to return it to everyday function.
Why the inside matters
A tooth can look intact while trouble develops within it.
The hard outer tooth surrounds a canal system that extends into the roots. Once the inner tissue cannot recover, cleaning and sealing that space may be the most predictable way to preserve the tooth.

Possible warning signs

Is root canal therapy painful?+
The tooth is numbed before treatment. You may feel pressure or vibration, but sharp pain should be reported immediately. The inflammation present before treatment can also affect comfort and recovery.
How many appointments will I need?+
Some teeth can be treated in one appointment, while complex anatomy, active infection or other factors may require additional visits. Your dentist will explain the anticipated sequence.
Will the tooth feel normal afterward?+
Tenderness when biting can occur for a short period. It should improve. Contact the clinic if pain or swelling is significant, worsening or not following the expected course.
Do I need a crown afterward?+
Many back teeth need cuspal coverage after root canal therapy, while the recommendation for front teeth varies with remaining structure and bite. Your dentist will explain the restoration needed.
Can infection return?+
A treated tooth can develop a new problem because of leakage, fracture, complex anatomy or new decay. Regular care and a sound final restoration help protect the result.
Is extraction cheaper than a root canal?+
