How custom dental work gets made

Restorative & Prosthodontics for Polo Park Residents

A crown or denture doesn’t come off a shelf. It starts with detailed records of your mouth, goes through fabrication, and is checked in place before anyone calls it finished.

Behind a finished restoration

Your records are the blueprint.

If you enjoy knowing how things work, restorative dentistry has more going on than the final fitting suggests. Polo Park is an area in Winnipeg, and residents curious about the behind-the-scenes process will find it explained here, from the first measurement to the last adjustment.

Scans or impressions capture the shape of teeth and tissues, while bite records show how your upper and lower teeth meet and move. Shade and surface details help the piece blend in. Those records guide fabrication, and your dentist at our McPhillips Street clinic then assesses the finished work in your mouth before accepting it.

Shape is captured

A digital scan or physical impression records your teeth and the tissue surrounding them in careful detail.

Bite is mapped

How your jaws come together, and slide, informs the shape of whatever is being built for that space.

Shade is communicated

Notes on colour and texture travel with the prescription, so the restoration can relate to its neighbours.

Your part in the process

Why you may be asked to come back.

Multiple visits aren’t a sign that something went wrong. Custom work is often developed and checked in more than one sitting.

  1. 01

    Records are gathered

Once a plan is agreed and the tooth or area is prepared, the details needed for your particular restoration are collected.

  2. 02

    Fabrication follows

The piece is produced to the dentist’s prescription, and a temporary may protect a prepared tooth during that wait.

  3. 03

    Fit gets evaluated

Contact, bite, comfort and appearance are all reviewed. Adjustments happen then, or the work may go back for refinement.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about restorative & prosthodontics in Polo Park.

Ask our team
How long does the making stage take?

Timing varies with the type and complexity of the work, the materials and the steps involved. Your dentist can outline the expected order for your own restoration.

What happens if the shade looks wrong at the fitting?

Colour is judged with the piece in your mouth and under suitable light. When it falls short of the clinical plan, refinement may be recommended before it is accepted.

Why does a finished piece sometimes need adjusting?

Records are very detailed, but contact points can reveal themselves once you talk and chew. Small refinements are a normal part of many custom treatments.

Is a scan different from an impression?

Both capture your teeth and tissues for the same purpose, one digitally and the other as a physical mould. Which one is used may depend on the work being made.

Are appliances such as guards custom-made as well?

Selected guards, trays and similar devices can be prescribed and produced from records in much the same way, each for a particular patient and purpose.

Can I say something if a new piece rubs or catches?

Please do. Tell your dentist where it rubs, feels high or changes your speech, so that it can be evaluated rather than quietly put up with.

How does a Polo Park resident ask about custom work?

Send a request naming the restoration you have in mind, or call (204) 338-3003. Appointments for records and fittings take place on McPhillips Street.

Curious about your own case?

Ask what your restoration would involve.

Tell us which piece you’re thinking about, or just the problem you’ve noticed. The clinic will contact you regarding a time.
