The tooth that doesn’t match

Restorative & Prosthodontics for Highland Pointe Residents

One crown looks flat, a filling has yellowed, or a single tooth sits darker than the rest. Matching is more involved than picking a colour, and the right fix depends on why it stands out.

Why one tooth stands out

Colour is just one part of a match.

Natural teeth contain several colours at once, and they let light through in a way that is hard to imitate. A restoration can have an acceptable shade yet still catch the eye because its surface is too smooth or its shape is slightly off. Highland Pointe residents can raise this at our Winnipeg clinic on McPhillips Street, where the tooth and its neighbours can be looked at together.

Health comes into it too. A mismatch sometimes appears at the edge of older work, and that edge deserves a look regardless of appearance. Decay, gum inflammation or heavy bite forces may need attention before any new shade or shape is planned.

Translucency

How light travels through a material and bounces back from it changes how lifelike a tooth seems.

Surface texture

Tiny details on the surface affect where highlights fall, which can make a smooth restoration noticeable.

Form

Contour and proportion shape how a tooth reads in a smile, and they have to suit chewing as well.

Sorting out a mismatch

Work out why it shows before changing it.

A short sequence can stop you from replacing something when a simpler answer is available.

Request your visit
  1. 01

    Point out what you see

Show us the tooth and describe when it bothers you. A photo of your smile can help explain what caught your eye.

  2. 02

Check the health of the tooth

The restoration, its margins, the gums and your bite are examined, since appearance work relies on all of them being sound.

  3. 03

    Talk through the order

If you are also thinking about whitening, raise it now. Restorations are generally matched to neighbouring teeth, so the sequence can matter.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about restorative & prosthodontics in Highland Pointe.

Ask our team
Can you match a new crown to my other teeth perfectly?

A natural relationship is the goal, rather than an identical copy. Teeth have many colours and optical qualities, and both lighting and a dried-out tooth can alter how a shade appears.

Will whitening lighten my crown or filling too?

Whitening is meant for natural tooth colour, so it should not be counted on to change existing restorations. Ask how it might affect the look of your smile before you start.

Why has my tooth-coloured filling darkened?

Surfaces and margins can stain, especially with tobacco, drinks, roughness or plaque buildup. Sometimes polishing is an option, and replacement isn’t always called for.

Would a veneer solve a colour problem?

Possibly, for discolouration that doesn’t respond predictably to whitening. Bonding, whitening or another approach could fit better, and veneers usually involve some permanent enamel preparation.

Does replacing an old crown put the tooth at risk?

Removing older work can reveal more than an examination shows from the outside, and any restoration takes some material with it. Ask what your dentist can tell beforehand, and what might change the plan.

Do Highland Pointe patients book a separate visit just to ask about appearance?

You can request an assessment for that reason alone. Mention the tooth when you call (204) 338-3003 or send the form, so the clinic knows what you want to look at.
