Planning denture visits from outside the city

Restorative & Prosthodontics for East St. Paul Residents

Dentures are fitted in stages and usually fine-tuned afterward. If you live outside Winnipeg, a few questions up front can make those try-ins and adjustment visits simpler to organize.

Dentures and the trips they take

A denture isn’t finished the day you receive it.

Fit, bite and appearance develop through several appointments, and sore spots often show up only after a denture has been worn for a while. East St. Paul sits outside the City of Winnipeg, so residents who choose our clinic on McPhillips Street will want to think about those return trips while they plan.

Whether you are getting a first complete denture, a partial, or looking into implant attachments, the same stages generally apply: examine, record, try in, deliver and adjust. Your dentist assesses what suits your mouth. You can ask how the appointments are likely to be spaced, and what to do if a problem turns up between them.

Try-in

Tooth position, smile, speech and bite are evaluated before processing, so ask what to bring and how long to allow.

Adjustments

Sore areas should be seen to at the clinic rather than endured or altered at home, so ask how to arrange a visit.

Later changes

As gums and jaw change over time, relining, adjustment or replacement may be needed following an assessment.

Organizing your denture visits

Plan for the fitting and for what follows.

New dentures involve a period of learning. These points may help you line up your trips into Winnipeg with that period.

Request your visit
  1. 01

    Bring what you wear now

An existing denture or partial is part of the examination, so keep it with you, and bring along your medication list as well.

  2. 02

Ask about the spacing of visits

Ask how far apart the record, try-in and delivery appointments tend to be, and whether anything is needed from you in between.

  3. 03

Line up your first days at home

Manageable foods and reading aloud are good starting points. Ask when your first follow-up should fall after delivery.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about restorative & prosthodontics in East St. Paul.

Ask our team
How many appointments does a new denture take?

More than one, as the process runs through examination, records, a try-in, then delivery and adjustment. The number depends on your situation, so ask for an estimate when you plan.

My denture is rubbing, and my next visit is weeks away. What should I do?

Call the clinic instead of waiting or filing it down yourself. Pressure spots are meant to be adjusted in the office, and home alterations can harm the fit.

Should I bring my denture if I need a repair?

Yes, and call ahead to explain the damage, so the clinic can tell you how to proceed. Avoid gluing or reshaping it at home in the meantime.

Do I still need regular visits once I have a full denture?

You do. Your gums and other soft tissues, how the denture fits and signs of disease still deserve a check, and partial wearers have remaining teeth to look after too.

Could implant attachments be added to the denture I already wear?

Sometimes, if its fit, bite, strength and tooth position are suitable. Otherwise a new one is made. Implants also need healing time, which you should factor into your planning.

What kind of toothpaste should I use on my denture?

Many regular pastes are too abrasive for denture materials. Use the brush and cleanser recommended for your appliance, and remember to clean your gums and tongue too.

How would East St. Paul residents request a denture assessment?

Use the form on this page or call (204) 338-3003, noting what you currently wear and what you hope to change. The clinic follows up with available times.
