Pediatric Dentistry for Old Kildonan Residents

One child never gets cavities, and another seems to get them constantly. At our McPhillips Street clinic, each sibling’s care is planned around that child, not around the family.

Dental Care for Siblings in Old Kildonan Families

It can seem unfair when two children raised on the same food and the same toothpaste end up with very different dental check-ups. Brothers and sisters often differ in tooth development, habits and risk, and a family’s routine rarely fits them all.

Old Kildonan is in Winnipeg, and families there can bring their children to our clinic on McPhillips Street. We see infants, children and teens, and we treat each as a separate case, so one child’s advice may have little in common with what their sibling hears.

No family average

Each child’s recommendations come from their own assessment.

All ages welcome

Infants, school-age children and teens can all receive care with us.

Different schedules

Recall timing may vary between brothers and sisters, and that’s normal.

Sorted by stage

How the focus shifts from one child to the next.

Parents with a spread of ages often find themselves asking very different questions in a single week. The appointment changes as each child moves through childhood.

Your youngest and middle children

In the early years, a lot of the attention goes to emerging teeth and to the adult doing the helping.

  • For little ones: feeding, pacifiers and how to brush.
  • For school-age kids: new permanent teeth and bite development.
  • Spots they tend to miss when brushing by themselves.

Your oldest

Teens bring another set of topics, as routines loosen up and independence grows.

  • Possible conversations about braces or wisdom teeth.
  • Protecting teeth during sports.
  • Diet and changing daily routines.

Any cleaning, fluoride, sealants or X-rays are recommended for each child individually, based on age and risk.

One child at a time

The same path, walked at different speeds.

Your eldest may be done with the chair in no time while your youngest is still making friends with the mirror. Both are fine.

  1. 01

    An age-appropriate hello

Words and explanations change depending on who is climbing into the chair.

  2. 02

    That child’s exam

The dentist looks at development, teeth and gums to the degree each child is comfortable.

  3. 03

    That child’s prevention

What’s recommended reflects individual risk, even if a sibling received something else.

  4. 04

    Separate notes for you

Expect brushing, diet and habit advice specific to each child, with their own suggested return date.

Keeping it straight

Give each child their own short list.

When you’re looking after several children, details blur together. Write down each child’s concerns separately. And be careful with comparisons at home, since an older sibling’s dramatic retelling can leave a younger one worried.

For any questions on fees or insurance, ask the clinic ahead of time, because they turn on your plan and on the care each child receives.

For each child, note

  • Medications and allergies.
  • Past dental experiences, including how they went.
  • Thumb sucking or pacifier use, if relevant.
  • Pain, sensitivity or a recent injury.

No comparisons

A nervous child isn’t behind a brave one.

Being the sibling who cries can feel awful for a child. We don’t measure one against another, and a quick look in the chair can be a real achievement for one child, even if a sister or brother took it all in stride.

Their own pace

Each child sets their own speed, whatever their sibling did earlier.

Language that fits

A toddler and a teen need different explanations, and each gets one that suits them.

Tell us who’s who

Let us know which child is anxious, so that we can plan around them.

Back in a busy house

One bathroom, several routines.

No single plan will fit everyone in the household. Your little one needs hands-on help, while your older child may need only a nudge, and the advice you get should reflect that.

01

Different levels of help

Adjust your supervision to each child’s age and how independent they really are.

02

Shared kitchen, shared snacks

Household food habits affect everyone, so changes here may benefit all of your children.

03

Tracking return dates

Keep separate recall dates, since each one depends on that child’s own factors.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about pediatric dentistry in Old Kildonan.

Ask our team
Can my Old Kildonan family ask about appointments for two children?

Yes, ask when you phone (204) 338-3003 or send the form. List each child’s age and needs, and the clinic can tell you what’s possible at McPhillips Street.

Why does one of my kids get cavities and not the other?

Risk is individual. Tooth development, hygiene and habits may all differ between children under one roof, and the dentist can tell you which factors seem to apply.

Do siblings need to come in on the same schedule?

Not necessarily. Each child’s interval depends on development, cavity risk, hygiene and past treatment, so their return dates may not match.

My younger child is scared because of what an older sibling said. What can I do?

Keep your own explanation brief and calm, and let us know before the visit. We can take things gradually and explain each step in words your younger child understands.

Is the toothpaste advice the same for my whole family?

Often it isn’t. Brushing support and fluoride guidance depend on age and cavity risk, so the amount and approach for a young child can differ from an older one’s.

Two of my children need different things. Who decides what comes first?

Tell the clinic about any pain or injury straight away, and phone instead of using the form if a child is hurting. Otherwise, the clinic can talk through timing with you.

More than one child to think about?

Each one can have care that fits them.

Start with a request and tell us about your children. The clinic will come back to you about visits in Winnipeg.
