Is a dental laser dangerous?+
Dental lasers are used with procedure-specific settings, trained hands and protective eyewear. The dentist also looks at whether the treatment suits you personally before it’s offered.
Will it burn?+
Your comfort depends on the procedure and the area involved, and local anesthetic may be advised. If you feel anything concerning, say so at once so the dentist can stop or change what is happening.
Could the laser touch the wrong spot?+
The whole approach is built around applying energy only to tissue planned beforehand, with controlled settings. You can ask the dentist to show you the intended area when it’s explained to you.
Do I have to agree to a laser if one is mentioned?+
Consent comes before care, and you have the chance to ask questions before treatment starts. Tell the dentist about any hesitation so that other approaches can be discussed.
Does laser treatment mean something serious is wrong?+
Not by itself. A laser may be considered for small soft-tissue work as well as for selected gum procedures, and the choice of tool doesn’t tell you how serious a concern is.
Whom should Kildonan residents speak to about the laser?+
Telephone (204) 338-3003 or complete the form on this page, and mention you’d like to talk through the laser before deciding. Any assessment takes place at our McPhillips Street clinic.
