Invisalign for Riverbend Residents

Overlapping lower teeth, a rotated canine, floss that always snags: crowding is a common reason to ask about aligners. Riverbend residents can learn how room gets planned.

Crowding, step by step

How Aligners Make Room for Overlapping Teeth

When teeth are crowded, the real puzzle is space. A rotated tooth can’t simply swing into line if its neighbour is occupying the room, so a plan needs to work out where that space will come from and which tooth moves when.

That sequencing is what digital planning is good at, and it’s also why an examination has to come first. Riverbend residents who’d like crowding looked at can request an assessment at our McPhillips Street clinic in Winnipeg.

Space comes first

Before teeth can straighten, a plan decides how room for them will be created and shared out.

Order matters

Movements are sequenced so that each tooth has somewhere to go at each stage of your series.

Keep flossing

Trays lift out, so you can still reach those tight contacts with brush and floss every day.

Where the room comes from

Finding space, then using it.

There’s more than one way to create room. The approach that’s appropriate depends on your teeth, your gums and the amount of crowding involved.

Ways to create room

A plan may use one technique or several, and each is considered during the design stage for your particular arches.

  • Planned expansion, in which an arch is gently widened.
  • Limited enamel reduction, removing small amounts between selected teeth.
  • Redistributing whatever spare room your arches already have.
  • Combining braces or other approaches if trays alone seem less predictable.

Ways to control movement

Unwinding a rotated tooth takes real grip, which is why trays often get a little help from added features.

  • Small bonded shapes that help the tray turn and angle a tooth.
  • Tray changes as prescribed, following your planned sequence.
  • Regular comparison of your teeth with the digital plan.
  • Prompt attention if a tray stops seating against crowded teeth.

Enamel reduction and expansion are used only when appropriate. If either is proposed for you, ask why it was suggested and what it would involve.

A plan for crowded arches

How crowding gets worked through.

Your plan may differ, particularly if your crowding involves your bite as well. This is the general order of things.

Request your visit
  1. 01

    Measure the problem

An examination considers your tooth position, root support and gums, and we discuss which crowded areas concern you most.

  2. 02

    Record every angle

Scans and photographs capture how your teeth overlap. Any appropriate X-rays are reviewed before your plan begins to be designed.

  3. 03

    Work out the sequence

The design phase determines where space comes from and in what order teeth should move, then the plan is explained to you.

  4. 04

    Move and review

Trays and any attachments are fitted, with instruction on their care. Later visits check that teeth are moving as they’re expected to.

What you’ve noticed

A little background helps.

Crowding often gets worse so slowly that you only notice from old photos. If you’ve seen a change over the years, that is useful to mention at your assessment.

If you’d like an idea of cost and insurance before starting, ask when you book, and again once the plan for your crowding is clearer.

Mention these if they apply

  • Spots where floss shreds or food tends to collect.
  • Older pictures that show how your teeth have changed.
  • Your complete list of prescriptions and supplements.
  • CDCP or insurer information you’d like the clinic to have.

Questions welcome

Enamel reduction, attachments and other unfamiliar words.

A crowding plan can contain terms you’ve never heard of. Please ask until they make sense, as you should feel comfortable with what’s being proposed.

Understand any enamel work

Before any reduction, ask which teeth are involved and why the room is needed there.

Snug trays, tight spots

If a tray is difficult to remove around overlapping teeth, ask us to go over how to do it.

Sensitive areas

Tell us about any sensitive teeth early, or call the clinic if something changes during treatment.

When things line up

Crowding tends to want to return.

Once teeth have been aligned, they still need help staying put. Retainers carry on where your trays left off, and refinement can address what remains.

01

Tidying up the last rotations

A stubborn tooth might not fully complete its turn within the first series. Should that happen, new records could support a further order of aligners.

02

Why retention isn’t optional

Teeth don’t stop moving just because treatment has ended. Prescribed retainers are the tool that helps limit crowding from coming back.

03

Cleaning aligned teeth

Ask for tips on brushing and flossing your newly straightened teeth, and on keeping your retainer itself clean.

If you start to see an overlap coming back, please let the clinic know.

Your questions, answered.

Helpful details about invisalign in Riverbend.

Ask our team
Can aligners fix crowded lower teeth?

They can create and distribute room to align overlapping or rotated teeth in many cases. How much crowding you have, and how your teeth sit, will determine whether trays are appropriate.

What does enamel reduction mean?

It’s a limited removal of enamel between certain teeth to give them room to align. It’s used only when appropriate, and the dentist can explain whether your plan calls for it.

What do attachments do for a rotated tooth?

These small bonded shapes give the tray something to push against. That extra leverage helps it control rotation, angle and root position, which a smooth tooth surface may not allow.

Will treatment make it easier to clean my teeth?

During treatment, trays are removed for brushing and flossing, so you keep full access to your teeth. Afterward, ask us about a cleaning routine suited to your newly aligned teeth.

Can crowding come back after Invisalign?

It can, since teeth may shift over a lifetime. Sticking with your prescribed retainers is the key to limiting that movement.
