The short version

What Gum Contouring Involves in Winnipeg North

Gum contouring removes or reshapes selected gum tissue so the line around your teeth looks more even, or so more natural tooth shows. It may be done for appearance alone or to prepare for cosmetic or restorative work.

Winnipeg North Dental is at 2358 McPhillips Street, and every stage happens there. Measurements come first, because the bone under the gum determines how far a margin can move and still stay stable and easy to keep clean.

Planned around bone

The supporting bone sets the practical limit on where a new gum margin can sit.

Done under local anaesthetic

The area being treated is numbed before any tissue is reshaped.

Reviewed afterward

A follow-up looks at closure and plaque control once healing is underway.

The two procedures

Soft tissue alone, or tissue and bone.

Which one applies comes down to the gap between the proposed gumline and the bone beneath it.

Gingival contouring

Selected tissue is taken away or reshaped using a laser or another precise instrument, chosen to suit the case.

  • Suits limited changes where anatomy allows stable healing.
  • Requires bone to sit an appropriate distance from the new margin already.
  • Healing directions are matched to the amount of tissue changed.

Crown lengthening

A surgical approach used when bone sits too close to where the gumline needs to go, or when more natural tooth has to be exposed.

  • The tissue is opened surgically to reach what lies underneath.
  • Supporting bone may be adjusted to make room for healthy tissue.
  • The gum is then secured at its planned level, sometimes with sutures.

A dental laser is not suitable for everything. Access, tissue thickness and any need for bone adjustment all affect the technique.

Visit by visit

What happens, in order.

No two plans are identical, but most follow this sequence once your dentist has decided treatment is suitable.

Request your visit
  1. 01

    Assessment and records

Your gum health, tooth proportions and lip movement are reviewed, with photos taken and gum levels measured against neighbouring teeth.

  2. 02

    Mapping the margin

Proposed margins are set against tooth width, midline and smile curve. Thickness of the tissue and position of the bone are also checked.

  3. 03

    Treatment appointment

After local anaesthetic, the planned line is marked, the tissue is reshaped and any bleeding is brought under control.

  4. 04

    Follow-up and settling

You return so the healing can be examined and any sutures removed. The margin goes on settling for some time after that.

Getting ready

Three questions to answer for yourself.

Is it one tooth or the whole smile? Is the goal appearance alone, or are veneers or crowns part of the plan? Do you see it at rest or only when smiling broadly? Your answers give the assessment a clear starting point.

Ask for an estimate and the expected number of appointments when the plan is clear. Coverage depends on your own plan.

Have this information handy

  • Medications you take and recent changes in your health.
  • Past gum treatment or surgery in the area of concern.
  • Any plans already underway for veneers, crowns or other cosmetic work.
  • The name of your insurer or your CDCP information, should either apply.

On the day

What it feels like, realistically.

Local anaesthetic handles comfort during the procedure. Soreness afterward depends on the extent of treatment, and you will get directions and comfort measures that reflect yours.

Before anything begins

Let us know if you feel anxious so the sequence can be walked through first.

During the procedure

Speak up, or signal, if you feel something unexpected and would like the work to stop.

Once you are home

Leave the treated area undisturbed and follow what you were told about food, rinsing and medication.

Afterward

Do not judge it in the first few days.

Tissue often looks red, puffy or slightly uneven early on. That says little about how the finished margin will look.

01

Keep the area clean

Good plaque control matters while tissue heals, so use the cleaning method you were shown for this stage.

02

Come back as scheduled

The review lets your dentist see how the tissue has closed and remove sutures where they were placed.

03

Wait on restorations

Scans, impressions or bonding may need to hold off until the margin has matured.

Is a laser always used?

No. Lasers may work for selected soft-tissue changes, while other instruments or surgery are used when thickness, access or bone demands them.

Could bone need to be removed?

Sometimes, but not in every case. It comes into consideration when bone sits too near the proposed gumline or when more tooth must be reliably exposed.

Do gums grow back after contouring?

They can drift toward where they started if the plan ignores the anatomy underneath. That is why the distance from bone to margin gets measured beforehand.

How many appointments should I expect?

At minimum, plan on an assessment, the procedure and a follow-up. The exact count depends on the extent of treatment and any restorative work planned afterward, so ask once your plan is clear.
