Swelling of the gum, face or jaw, a bad taste, drainage or fever with a dental concern.

A missing filling, crown or bridge that leaves the tooth painful, sharp or vulnerable.

Call first whenever possible. These general steps may help protect the area while you arrange professional care, but they do not replace an examination.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. Keep it moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and seek care immediately. Do not reinsert a baby tooth.
Broken tooth
Rinse gently, save any pieces you can find and use a cool compress outside the face if swelling develops. Avoid chewing on that side.
Toothache or swelling
Rinse with warm salt water and clean carefully around the area. Do not place aspirin or another medication directly on the gum or tooth.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the restoration if you have it and avoid sticky or hard foods. Do not use household glue to put it back in place.

Sometimes immediate treatment can be completed, while other situations require stabilization, medication when clinically indicated or a separate appointment for definitive care.
Should I go to a hospital for tooth pain?+
Most isolated dental pain is best assessed by a dentist. Seek emergency medical care for breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or serious facial trauma.
What should I bring?+
Bring identification, current medications and allergies, insurance or CDCP information, and any broken tooth pieces or displaced dental work you have saved.
Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?+
An adult tooth may sometimes be replanted, and time matters. Handle it by the crown, keep it moist and contact a dentist immediately. Never reinsert a baby tooth.
