What to Ask at a Denture Consultation, for Brooklands Residents

If you like walking into appointments prepared, this one’s for you. A first conversation about dentures may cover a lot of ground, from the design that might suit you to how long you’ll be adapting, and a few written questions can keep you from forgetting what matters.

You don’t have to understand denture terminology to ask well. Start with what bothers you now, such as chewing, speaking or the look of your smile, and go from there. The questions below are starting points, so keep whichever fit and ignore those that don’t.

Start with your goal

Say what you’d like to do more easily, whether that’s eating, talking or smiling in photos.

Ask what the options are

Your exam findings shape which designs make sense, so ask how they apply to your mouth.

Ask about the long run

Questions about upkeep, fit and later visits are as useful as questions about the making.

The design question

Which type of denture would I be looking at?

That’s often the first big question. Learning how each design works lets you follow the dentist’s reasoning and ask more specific things.

Ask about a complete denture if

An upper or lower arch has no teeth left, or may not in future. This design replaces the entire arch and takes its support from the tissues and jaw shape beneath.

  • Ask how your jaw shape could influence stability.
  • Ask how uppers and lowers may differ for you.
  • Ask what signs would call for a reline later.

Ask about a partial denture if

You’ve still got natural teeth in that arch. A partial replaces selected teeth, using those remaining teeth and your oral tissues for support and retention.

  • Ask which of your teeth it would rely on.
  • Ask what caring for those teeth would involve.
  • Ask how to handle it when taking it out.

If a removable denture isn’t what you want, ask what alternatives are available to you. Your suitability is assessed by the dentist.

The process question

What would happen, and in what order?

The general sequence is below. As you read it, note down anything you’d like to know more about for your own case.

Request your visit
  1. 01

The exam: what are you finding?

The dentist will assess tissues, remaining teeth, jaw relationship and any appliance you have, so ask what they see and how that affects your options.

  2. 02

    The records: what’s being captured?

Impressions or scans record your mouth, while another step notes how your jaws meet. Ask what each is used for if you’re curious.

  3. 03

The try-in: what can I still change?

Tooth position, smile, speech and bite are evaluated before processing. Ask at this stage what can be altered.

  4. 04

Delivery: what happens if it’s sore?

Pressure areas, retention and function are checked when it’s delivered, and follow-up is planned. Ask what to do if a problem comes up afterward.

The practical questions

Ask about time and cost, too.

It’s perfectly reasonable to discuss the practical side openly. Knowing what’s ahead can make it easier to decide what you’d like to do.

Estimates depend on your exam and the design you choose, so ask what’s included and how your benefits or CDCP could be relevant, if at all.

Add to your list

  • How many appointments would you expect in my case?
  • What would an estimated cost include, and what wouldn’t it cover?
  • What information would you need from my benefits plan?
  • Do you need a list of my medications or health conditions?

The everyday questions

What will living with it be like?

No one can predict just how you’ll adapt, but you can ask what’s typical and what to do when things don’t go smoothly. That’s a helpful conversation to have early.

How will my speech be affected?

Some sounds may take practice at first, so ask which exercises, like reading aloud, you might try.

What should I eat at first?

Ask about starting with manageable foods, cutting smaller bites and using both sides when you chew.

Who do I call about soreness?

Make sure you know how to get a sore spot adjusted, since altering the appliance at home isn’t advised.

The long-term questions

What will it need from me later?

The making of a denture is only part of the story. Before you start, it helps to ask what your routine and future visits are likely to look like.

01

How do I clean it properly?

Ask which brush and cleanser to use, and how to clean your gums, tongue and remaining teeth at the same time.

02

How should I store it?

Find out how to store the appliance when it’s out, and how long it should be left out each day.

03

How often should it be reviewed?

Ask how frequently you should have your denture and mouth checked, as tissue changes can affect fit over time.

Ask our team
Is a first denture visit a commitment to go ahead?

You can raise this when you book. The aim of the exam is to help you understand your situation, and you’re free to ask for time to consider what the dentist tells you.

What’s the most useful thing to tell the dentist at the start?

Tell them what you’re finding hardest day to day and what you’d like to change. That gives the assessment and the conversation a clear starting point.

What should I ask about my remaining teeth?

Ask how healthy they are, what role they could play in a partial, and what ongoing care they’d need. The answers depend on what the exam shows.

Is it okay to bring written questions?

Yes, please do. Writing them out makes it less likely that you’ll forget something, and it lets you take notes on the answers you’re given.

What should I ask about alternatives to a denture?

Ask which other tooth replacement options might apply to you and how they differ. Implant-retained options are one topic you may want to raise, subject to assessment.
