Removable tooth replacement
A denture is designed for your mouth—not simply your missing teeth.
Dentures replace several or all teeth while supporting appearance, speech and everyday chewing. The design must relate to the gums, remaining teeth, jaw shape, bite and movements of the lips, cheeks and tongue.
They are removable appliances, and learning to use a new denture takes time. Planning, trial stages and follow-up adjustments help make that transition more manageable.

Partial denture
A partial denture replaces selected teeth and uses remaining teeth and oral tissues for planned support and retention.

More than one appointment is normally required because fit, bite and appearance are developed in stages.

Take impressions or scans and capture how the jaws meet.

The adaptation period
New dentures can feel unfamiliar before they feel routine.
Speech, chewing and saliva often change temporarily. Begin with manageable foods, practise reading aloud and wear the denture according to the instructions provided.

Sore areas should be adjusted rather than endured or altered at home.
Speech
Certain sounds may take practice as the tongue adapts to new contours.
Chewing
Smaller bites and balanced chewing on both sides can improve stability.
Retention
Upper and lower dentures behave differently because of anatomy and movement.
Daily denture care
Clean the appliance and the mouth beneath it.
Remove and brush the denture with an appropriate brush and cleanser. Clean the gums, tongue and remaining teeth, and store the appliance as directed when it is out of the mouth.
Fit changes over time.
Jaw and gum tissues continue changing after teeth are lost. A denture that once fit well may begin moving, trapping food or causing sore areas. Relining, adjustment or replacement may be needed after assessment.

Practical questions about removable teeth.
Will dentures let me eat normally?+
They can improve chewing, but they do not reproduce natural teeth exactly. Food choice and technique often improve with practice and adjustment.
Should I sleep in my dentures?+
Most patients are advised to remove them for a period each day so tissues can rest. Follow the instructions given for your situation.
Can I use regular toothpaste?+
Many toothpastes are abrasive for denture materials. Use products and brushes recommended for the appliance.
Why does my denture feel loose?+
Tissue changes, wear, bite changes or damage can affect retention. An assessment determines whether adjustment, reline or replacement is appropriate.
Do I still need dental visits without teeth?+
Yes. Oral tissues, fit, function and signs of disease still need review, and partial-denture patients need ongoing care for remaining teeth.
