Dental bonding uses tooth-coloured composite resin to repair or reshape selected areas directly in the mouth. Because material is added and sculpted chairside, many modest changes can be completed conservatively without sending a restoration to a laboratory.
The result depends on more than matching colour. Edge position, symmetry, surface texture, light reflection and bite contacts all shape whether the bonded area looks natural and functions comfortably.

Useful for selected modest changes; usually repairable and often requires little or no enamel removal.
Move the whole tooth

Living with bonding
Repairable does not mean indestructible.
Composite can chip, stain, roughen or wear. How long it serves depends on location, bite, habits, size and maintenance.

Avoid biting nails, opening packaging or chewing hard objects with bonded teeth.
Keep margins clean
Brush and clean between teeth normally to protect the natural tooth around the resin.
Watch for grinding
Clenching and edge-to-edge contacts can overload thin additions; a guard may be discussed.

Selected staining or roughness may be improved with professional refinishing before replacement is considered.

Does bonding require freezing?+
Often not when resin is added to intact enamel, but local anaesthetic may be appropriate if decay is removed, a fracture is sensitive or tooth preparation is needed.
Will bonding match my tooth?+
We select and layer shades to relate to nearby enamel. A natural tooth has multiple optical qualities, so the goal is a close relationship rather than one flat colour.
Does bonding stain?+
Composite can absorb or collect stain and may lose surface polish over time. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can make changes more noticeable.
Can bonding close any gap?+
No. Adding too much width can create poor proportions, plaque traps or bite interference. Larger spaces may be better managed with orthodontics or a broader restorative plan.
Can chipped bonding be repaired?+
Often, if the remaining resin and tooth are sound. The cause of the chip should be assessed before adding material back.
Should I whiten before bonding?+
If a lighter overall shade is desired, whitening is generally completed first because resin will not lighten afterward. Bonding can then be matched to the settled shade.
