Questions to ask about veneers

The worry about looking fake is a fair one.

Residents of The Maples often come to this subject with mixed feelings: they would like a change, but they want teeth that still look like theirs. A veneer is a thin restoration covering the visible surface of a selected front tooth, and its look depends on shade, proportion and how much room is available. Part of planning is defining what should stay recognizably you.

Veneers are not the automatic answer, either. Whitening may handle colour, bonding may manage a modest shape concern, and Invisalign can move a tooth that would otherwise be disguised. Tooth reshaping and gum contouring round out the choices, and comparing all of them is a sensible first step.

Mind the enamel

Once a tooth has been prepared, it continues to need a restoration, even if the veneer on it is replaced later on.

Match the material to you

Porcelain and composite differ in how they are made, how they hold colour and how readily they can be repaired.

A careful beginning

How the conversation unfolds.

Nothing has to be prepared at a first appointment. Your assessment is about learning whether veneers would suit you and which questions still need answers.

  1. 01

Show what you like and dislike

Let us know what you would change and what you would keep. Being specific about the look you want to avoid is useful, too.

  2. 02

    Have your starting point recorded

Gums, enamel, bite and any active decay are reviewed. Should you go ahead, photos, scans and shade records can establish your baseline.

  3. 03

    Test the alternatives

Ask how much enamel is available, whether bonding could achieve the change, whether orthodontics might preserve more tooth, and whether your bite can protect an edge.

Helpful details about cosmetic & orthodontics in The Maples.

Ask our team
Will veneers make my teeth look too white or bulky?

They should be planned around the shade you choose, your facial proportions and the space available. Previewing the shape and controlling preparation both help avoid an artificial or over-contoured look.

How much of my tooth gets removed?

Many veneers need some enamel taken away, with the amount varying by tooth position, material and design. You will hear the proposed reduction before treatment, and minimal preparation still is not reversible.

What is the difference between porcelain and composite?

Porcelain is made outside the mouth from a scan or impression and holds colour strongly, though chips can be hard to repair invisibly. Composite is sculpted on the tooth and is easier to revise, but may stain.

Can a tooth under a veneer still decay?

The veneer cannot, but the natural tooth can, at the margins or on uncovered surfaces. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular examinations all continue to matter.

How long will veneers last?

No fixed lifespan applies. Material, bite, grinding, daily habits, hygiene and maintenance each play a part in chipping, debonding, staining and when replacement eventually comes up.

Who might not be suited to veneers?

Active decay, inflamed gums, severe crowding, an unstable bite or very little healthy enamel may all call for a different plan, as may a tooth that is heavily weakened or root-canal-treated.

Can I talk about this without committing, coming from The Maples?

Yes. An assessment simply gives you information to consider. Phone (204) 338-3003 or use this page’s form to ask for one at our Winnipeg clinic, and a time will be confirmed by the office.
