When the gumline is what you see

Cosmetic & Orthodontics for Seven Oaks Residents

Short-looking teeth or an uneven gumline can make you smile with your mouth closed. Understanding why it looks that way is the first step toward knowing what may help.

More to it than gum tissue

A gummy smile is a description, not a diagnosis.

If you live in Seven Oaks and have searched for a way to show less gum, you may already have run into gum contouring. It can be a helpful option, but only when extra tissue is the real cause and the anatomy underneath supports changing it safely.

Teeth may look short because they are worn, an active upper lip can reveal more gum over perfectly healthy margins, and jaw position has an influence of its own. Depending on what is found, the answer might involve contouring, bonding or veneers for tooth proportion, or an orthodontic discussion. Whitening is available as well, for colour concerns.

Tooth, gum and lip together

How much structure shows depends on all three, and on how your lip moves as you speak, rest and smile fully.

Bone sets the boundary

A gum margin needs adequate space from the bone below it, or the tissue may rebound toward where it started.

Healing takes patience

Tissue can look red or swollen early on, and the contour goes on settling well after the appointment itself.

Before tissue is changed

Measuring comes ahead of reshaping.

An uneven gumline can be assessed fairly thoroughly before any decision is made, and that information shapes the options you will hear about.

  1. 01

    Tell us what you see

When you make contact, describe whether it bothers you at rest, in photographs, or only in a full smile.

  2. 02

    Have the margins mapped

Photos and careful measurements compare neighbouring teeth, tissue thickness and where enamel ends. Bone sounding or imaging may be added if the supporting bone position is uncertain.

  3. 03

    Learn which level applies

Soft-tissue contouring may be enough for limited changes. Crown lengthening, a surgical approach that may adjust bone, is considered when bone sits too close to the desired line.

Helpful details about cosmetic & orthodontics in Seven Oaks.

Ask our team
Can you tell why my smile shows so much gum?

An examination can look at the likely contributors: covered tooth structure, worn teeth, lip movement and jaw relationship. The cause decides what is appropriate, and in some cases contouring is not the answer.

Is my tissue going to grow back after contouring?

It can drift toward its former position when the underlying anatomy has not been respected. Planning around the distance between bone and margin is what supports a steadier result.

Is crown lengthening the same as gum contouring?

No. Contouring removes or reshapes soft tissue, while crown lengthening accesses the area surgically and may adjust supporting bone. The second is used when more natural tooth must be exposed.

Is the procedure uncomfortable?

Local anaesthetic keeps the area comfortable during treatment. Later tenderness varies with how many teeth are involved and whether bone was treated, and you will receive personalized comfort instructions.

I want veneers too. When should those happen?

Gum work usually needs thinking about first, because the margin may have to mature before final scans, impressions or bonding. Timing depends on where and how much tissue is treated.
