When colour is what you notice

Cosmetic & Orthodontics for Garden City Residents

Store-bought strips have not done much, or one tooth just looks different from the rest. Darker teeth have several possible causes, and each points somewhere else.

Why teeth look darker

Find the source before picking a shade.

Many Garden City residents who ask about whitening picture a single fix for a single problem. In reality, pigment from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco can sit on the enamel, colour can deepen within the tooth with age, and one dark tooth may trace back to trauma, decay or a large restoration.

Peroxide gel works well only on colour it can reach, and it leaves dental materials unchanged. When a stain will not respond, veneers or bonding may be worth discussing, while tooth reshaping, gum contouring and Invisalign address other parts of a smile altogether. An examination comes first in every case.

Stain on the surface

Everyday pigments collect on outer enamel, where a professional cleaning or whitening may be able to make a difference.

Colour from within

Discolouration inside enamel or dentin behaves differently, and the response to gel varies from one person to another.

One tooth out of step

A lone darker tooth deserves its own diagnosis, as full-smile whitening may not be the right answer for it.

A colour consultation

What gets checked before any gel.

Because whitening is elective, your oral health is reviewed ahead of it. Here is roughly how that conversation goes.

Request your visit
  1. 01

    Mention what you have tried

When you get in touch, note any strips or kits you have used, along with any sensitivity they caused.

  2. 02

    Get your starting point recorded

Cavities, cracks, recession and inflammation are looked for, a baseline shade is noted, and visible restorations are identified.

  3. 03

    Choose a pathway

A concentrated in-office appointment or gradual custom trays may be open to you. Your schedule, your sensitivity and your starting colour all shape that choice.

Helpful details about cosmetic & orthodontics in Garden City.

Ask our team
How white can my teeth get?

No responsible plan can name an exact shade in advance. The outcome hangs on your starting colour, the type of stain, your tooth structure and the protocol, so expect a realistic range instead.

My front crown is a different colour. Will whitening even it out?

No. A crown holds its colour while the teeth around it lighten, which can make a difference more obvious. Separate planning may be needed if the crown shows when you smile.

Whitening makes my teeth sensitive. Can I still do it?

Perhaps, once the cause has been assessed. A lower-strength or slower approach may feel better, though some conditions need treatment first. Tell us about any sharp or lingering pain.

Is whitening permanent?

Unfortunately not. Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, plaque and natural aging all influence how soon colour returns, and an occasional touch-up may be appropriate.

When would veneers make more sense than whitening?

They may be considered when colour does not respond as you had hoped, or when shape and surface need attention as well. They involve more commitment, so whitening or bonding is weighed first.
